WHY DO I USE HANDMADE SHEEP MILK SOAP?

The first time I washed my face with a bar of sheep milk soap was in the summer of 2024.

I had ordered a pack of three lavender bars, which are handmade by my sister Rose using the milk from her small flock of sheep and blending it with natural flowers and herbs which grow in her field and garden.

Rose lives in Cornwall, so I was the last member of our family to sample her homemade soap. She is too modest to tell me that her hobby had developed into a small business which she had launched on the e-commerce website “Etsy”.

I had never heard of soap and shampoo made from sheep milk, nor had I been aware of the growing trend for handmade natural soap which are free from the chemicals and artificial fragrances contained in cheap, mass-produced personal care products.

I soon discovered the difference between my old soap and natural handmade soaps, made using the traditional recipes of our grandparents.

It was like comparing chalk and cheese; the shop bought soap reminding me of chalk with it’s struggle to produce a lather and Rose’s handmade soap, foaming almost as fast as liquid soap, (no hint of cheese!).

My hands felt clean and smooth with a lovely hint of the lavender fragrance every time I brought them close to my nose.

I was totally in love with the lavender fragrance and used the sheep milk soap on the basin, in the shower and in the kitchen because I really enjoyed being surrounded by the fragrance of lavender.

I even tried washing my hair with the soap; the first time, I wasn’t unhappy with the result although my hair felt heavier, which I thought may have been because I hadn’t rinsed thoroughly enough or had used too much.  The second and third times were both different to the feel I am used to from liquid, mass produced shampoo and conditioner, both of which are the same brand as my old soap.

Whilst I am still trying Rose’s sheep milk shampoo, I have totally converted to her handmade sheep milk soap bars.  I bought a large batch of chamomile soap bars just before Christmas.  I gave many to my friends as gifts but I have just used the last of those I kept for myself.  My next soap will be lemongrass, which Rose made this spring.

I feel sheep milk soap is a little luxury I treat myself to every time I shower or wash.  I pay slightly more than I did for shop-bought soap, but the bars last longer and I have the same luxuriant lather from the start of a bar right down to the last tiny sliver of soap.  You don’t get that with cheap soap.  That last piece of cheap soap is useless and only fit for the bin by the time you get to the last quarter, in my opinion.

Her natural ingredients, produce a gentle soap which is perfect for all skin types from dry to sensitive.

Sheep’s milk is naturally rich in vitamins, minerals and amino acids which give the soap a natural boost for the complexion.  Do you remember learning about the Egyptian Queen, Cleopatra who bathed in milk every day to maintain her beauty.  With the soap from “Maid In Cornwall”, we can all indulge ourselves.

Sheep milk soap is made from milk the ewe produces after her lambs have been weened so the excess milk she produces has to be expressed for the health of the ewe.  Rose is scrupulously careful to maintain the health of her flock, so rest assured her soap is completely cruelty free.
