Have you ever lost all your possessions because your home had three feet of water flood through your ground floor?
I sincerely hope this has never happened to you, and that it never will. In July 2007, that is exactly what happened to me.

I had a stream running at the front of my house, about six feet below the level of my garden, and during a normal summer had around three inches of water in July. In 2007, a very wet summer, many regions of the UK were flooded . Rivers broke their banks, flooded fields and eventually the homes built decades earlier along the river banks. There had also been many new housing developments built on the old flood planes.
My beautiful house was built in the 1950’s and the stream banks in years gone by were managed by the land owners up and down stream to ensure that brambles, fallen branches and any obstructions to the flow were removed.
Complacency, during the dry years, lead to bad land management and councils not keeping road drainage clear. This lead to massive quantities of water, which was only about three hours very heavy rainfall, becoming trapped. Bridges were blocked by fallen branches, drains blocked by summer debris.
About 50 houses in my village suffered from a very rapid influx of filthy water, up to around three feet inside our houses.
I was very lucky to have very good insurance, which covered the costs of:
Installing dehumidifiers for about a month to dry out the walls, floors and cavities under the floors.
Paying for me to live in alternative accommodation for almost 6 months whilst my home was being repaired.
All the plaster needed to be hacked off, and the walls free of all moisture before any new plaster and wiring could begin.
All kitchen units and appliances had to be replaced
