How it all began
by rosemarie.owen-disney
Many years ago, I was asked to take care of some dairy goats whilst their owner went on holiday. They needed milking twice a day to prevent mastitis and drying up. There were two nannies in full milk a youngster too. I had previously been afraid of goats, but these girls were lovely and friendly and very easy to milk.
I was totally amazed at how much milk they produced each day and suddenly I had a freezer full of this gorgeous creamy white stuff. I had heard that milk could be used to produce soap so trawled through lots of YouTube videos and had my first dabble at producing homemade soap, mixing various essential oils with each batch. It was a great success and such a lovely product.
CRUELTY FREE
With the goats now gone back to their owners I realized I wanted to get into soap making with milk to give as Christmas and Birthday presents for friends and family. So began, Sheepishly Ewe. I milked some of my sheep and produced enough milk for my first batch of sheep’s milk soap. Milking sheep is a lot harder than milking goats but with a lot of patience my girls learnt to stand in the headstock and allow me to milk them.
ABOUT
After doing a lot of research into the benefits of different essential oils and carrier oils I have put together recipes suitable for all different skin types. I also make hair shampoo/conditioner bars which include eggs from my own flock of hens and a range of shampoos specifically for dogs. I wanted a product that isn’t filled with all sorts of nasty chemicals that are harmful to humans, dogs, and the planet.
Having the option to design my own products has given me the chance to develop a sustainable product that uses minimal packaging and is kind to the environment.
My product is cruelty free. I don’t remove lambs from mothers until the mothers are ready to wean them and then I milk the ewe. Most of my ewes lamb every other year.
