TREVOR NOAH: BORN A CRIME
STORIES FROM A SOUTH AFRICAN CHILDHOOD
Trevor Noah was born on the 20th February 1984 in Johannesburg, Transvaal, South Africa. His father, a Swiss-German is a white man. His mother, Patricia, is Xhosa, a black woman.
The title of Trevor’s memoirs, “Born A Crime”, is a statement of the situation Trevor was born into during the apartheid political rule which was strictly enforced in South Africa for many years.
It is incredible that under apartheid rule, Trevor was classified as a “coloured” person, his mother and extended family are “black”. He could have been removed from their care, to be brought up and educated as a “coloured” citizen. The family kept his existence secret for many years in order to be sure the authorities couldn’t remove him from them.
This story of overcoming prejudice, the legal system and a life amongst the abject poverty of people who have suffered at the hands of white people for decades.
Inspirational, motivational and an example of not being dragged down by mistakes of the past.
